Time to regenerate under the lime (tree)

In our last post here in the blog hut, Julia visited Bernhard Maurer's ‘valley shop’, where you can browse through regional alpaca and sheep products right on the market square in Wagrain. When you step out of his lovingly designed shop, you immediately notice the large lime tree on the market square. In my more than two years at the Tourist Office in Wagrain-Kleinarl, I have noticed time and again how often it is the centre of many great events.
For some time now, our team in Wagrain-Kleinarl has been focusing on genuine regeneration on holiday. Just like the annual rings of the lime tree, our pile of articles, newspapers and studies on the subject of regeneration is also growing. Recently at the top: ‘Lime tree, medicinal plant of the year 2025’. Naturally, I wanted to find out more about this fascinating tree on our marketplace.

Eine Kaiserlinde für Wagrain

History shows that our events do not take place under this tree by chance. Even in earlier times, the large lime tree of a community was the central meeting place. The term ‘Kaiserlinde’ (imperial lime tree) is often used, as in many Austrian towns the lime tree was planted in 1880 in honour of Emperor Franz Joseph's 50th birthday. Especially in rural communities, money was often lacking, so instead of an expensive monument, a lime tree was planted, which is still considered a landmark and cultural heritage today.

But why is the lime tree considered the medicinal plant of the year 2025?

The lime tree was awarded this honour by the Natural Healing Association Theophrastus due to its outstanding healing powers. Among the healing powers it is said to have are its cold remedy and its relaxing effect on stress, intestinal cramps and sleep disorders. Of course, I was particularly struck by the relaxing effect it has on stress. Because now I understand why the hustle and bustle under this imposing tree always feels so pleasant and relaxing, despite the crowds. The healing powers of the lime tree are simply omnipresent. How could it be otherwise, given the heart-shaped appearance of its leaves.

Community under the lime tree

Events can sometimes be exhausting. But why not visit events under the lime tree and be inspired by its regenerative power?

Do you also have a large lime tree in your town? If so, what events can you experience there?
