The sunset, a picnic basket...and alpacas?

Animal moments of pleasure on Eben's Gasthofberg

Yes, you read that right. From this summer, you can enjox a picnic with a difference at the Königshof in Eben im Pongau - a picnic surrounded by alpacas. Find out what you can expect from this culinary experience and what else there is to discover at the Königshof here.

The Königshof and its alpacas

You may have already read the name ‘Königshof’ here if you've stumbled across the ‘The longest night of the year…’ blog. Because while you can immerse yourself in the multifaceted ritual of incense burning here in the winter months, you can get to know the fluffy alpacas and their everyday life better in summer. Brigitte and her husband Richi started breeding alpacas over 10 years ago with two animals. The Königshof is now home to 19 alpacas and humans and animals are a well-rehearsed team. Brigitte has also been organising alpaca walks and farm tours for over five years in order to give locals and guests a better understanding of these special animals. During the farm tours, you even have the opportunity to make your own souvenirs from the fine alpaca wool. And if even I, as an absolute craft-phobe, can make a cute felt rabbit, then you can do it too 😉.

Always new ideas

Since June 2025, there has been something very special on the Königshof programme for all gourmets: the alpaca picnic. A few steps away from the Königshof, surrounded by the gentle four-legged friends, you take a seat on the picnic blanket in the middle of the meadow and open the well-filled picnic basket full of regional and homemade specialities. Everything is included for ‘a tasty snack’: fresh pastries, homemade spreads, cheese and sausage from the region, seasonal fruit and vegetables as well as homemade juices and fresh mountain spring water. In addition to the sunset picnic, breakfast guests have the option of combining the picnic with an alpaca hike in the morning. This means hiking first and then treating yourself to a well-earned snack. Whichever time of day you choose, whether as a family with children, as a couple or with friends - the main thing is to enjoy! Those who prefer not to eat meat can look forward to a vegetarian option, which can be prepared on request.

Regionality is a top priority

The alpaca picnic was created by Brigitte and the local Tourist Office. It is particularly important to them that regional and seasonal products end up in the picnic basket. For example, the pastries come from the local Eder bakery, spreads and juices come directly from Königshof, and cheese and sausage from local farms. My personal favourite combination from the picnic basket: the fresh, crispy baguette and a tasty cheese - my mouth is watering just thinking about it. You too? Then head to the alpaca picnic at the Königshof!
The sunset picnic can be booked online, the combination with the alpaca hike can be booked by email or by phone at the Eben im Pongau Tourist Office.
