Charming Advent in the Salzburger Sportwelt

As early as the beginning of December the pistes in the Salzburger Sportwelt are well-prepared: the first snow lies on the mountains and it’s not long til Christmas. Perfect conditions to get in the mood for the upcoming winter season in the heart of the Ski amadé.
Whilst on the pistes of Flachau, Wagrain-Kleinarl, St. Johann, Radstadt, Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Eben and Filzmoos sporting high spirits avail, down in the valley it’s more peaceful. Here the traditional alpine customs around Christmas time are underway. Guests are warmly invited to take part in this atmospheric time. Christmas markets, nativity plays, winter walks, Advent events and Pongau delicacies are absolute musts.

  • Light Advent in St. Johann (unfortunately cancelled)

    The Christmas Market in the park in front of the "Pongau Cathedral“ in St. Johann makes the eyes of children and adults sparkle in the truest sense of the word. Light installations in the trees and on the buildings transport visitors to an alpine Christmas winter wonderland, reminiscent of childhood Christamasses. Licht-Advent on the road: every Saturday in Advent with programme for kids and live music.

  • Christmas Idyll in Filzmoos

    At the foot of the Bishofsmütze mountain the "Filzmoos Christmas Idyll“ invites visitors to reflective hours with life-size nativity scene, giant silhouette, brass music, traditional “perchten” (devils), mulled wine, punch, tea and other surprises. The torchlit path leads from the Unterhofalm and the Oberhofalm over snow-covered alpine pasture to the picturesque Almsee Lake. Dates: 27.11., 28.11., 29.11., 02., 04., 05., 06., 13., 16., 18., 19., 20., 25., 26. und 27. December 2020.

  • Radstadt Christmas Walks (unfortunately cancelled)

    They have become a fixed point in the pre-Christmas period: the atmospheric Christmas walk for the whole family from 5 to 7 pm along the Kaiser Promenade and through the winter forest with Christmas music, apple punch and the "longest Advent calendar in Europe”.

  • "Advent in the Mountains“ in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee (unfortunately cancelled)

    A romantic Advent full of peace, quiet and reflection awaits guests in front of the historic backdrop of Altenmarkt-Zauchensee. From the end of November there are a number of events on the programme, putting local customs and traditions in the forefront.  Such Mountain Lake.Advent, the Smoke.Walks "Feel Nature“, and the Advent.Tour, the Winter.Market or the Christmas Market. With genuine handicrafts, music and regional delicacies the pre-Christmas period is celebrated in an authentic and traditional way.

  • TV recording of the “Magical Christmas in the Land of Silent Night" 

    On the 29th and 30th of November 2020 Flachau is once again backdrop for the Christmas programme "Magical Christmas in the Land of Silent Night“, which is shown on ORF 2 and Bayerischen Rundfunk shortly before Christmas in the main evening programme. The hosts Sonja Weissensteiner and DJ Ötzi present a Christmas evening from SalzburgerLand.

The "Silent Night" village Wagrain

“Silent Night! Holy Night!“ – Advent in the Silent Night resort of Wagrain
At Christmas 1818 the world-famous Christmas carol “Silent Night! Holy Night!“ was heard for the first time. The lyrics had been written in 1816 by Joseph Mohr, the melody was composed by the teacher Franz Xaver Gruber. After many years on the road Joseph Mohr came to Wagrain in 1837 and entered this history books as “social vicar“ here - his work left lasting marks in the resort. On the 4th of December 1848 Joseph Mohr died following a severe cold. His grave can be visited today, in the Parish Church you’ll find a memorial plaque and Joseph-Mohr memorial organ dating from 2006.
