Flachau‘s local mountain is the Griessenkar – and standing at an altitude of 1,991 m it is a great mountain for views, where you can savour a panorama of the Dachstein and Tauern ranges.
Thanks to the lifts Starjet 1 and 2 operating in summer, a peak experience is easily accessible and there’s a tour on the Griessenkar to suit every ability level.
No matter whether you prefer a circular tour with peak feeling, a sunrise tour with genuine highlight character, a fun family themed walk, an extensive high alpine hike or a hike to the Saukarfunktel as part of the Salzburger Summit Game, a hike up or on the Griessenkar is an absolute must during your holiday in Flachau.

Summit conquest as circular tour

From the Starjet 2 mountain station you head up at first along the forest road, before taking an idyllic hiking trail. Shortly before the ascent to the peak, for which sure-footedness is required, you once again have a really great view over Flachau. Arriving at the top of the Griessenkar, you firstly enjoy the fabulous panoramic view, write in the peak book and then of course the obligatory peak photo shouldn’t be forgotten. For the return path you hike down the other side of the Griessenkar until you reach the signpost pointing you to the trail over the Saukarriedl down to the Griessenkaralmen and the mountain station of the Star Jet 2.For this tour of around 5 km and around 300 m elevation gain you should plan approx. 2 hours.

Salzburg Summit Game – High alpine hike to the Griessenkar and the Saukarfunktel

This tour could be described an extensive tour. From the peak of the Griessenkar you follow the ridge along to the Saukarfunktel (2,028 m). This is one of the 7 peaks in the Salzburg Summit Game. Afterwards you follow the trail onward to the Frauenalm and further along a trail back to the Griessenkaralmen and to the Starjet 2 mountain station.Along this tour you conquer approx. 10 km and 530 m elevation gain. You should reckon with a walking time of around 4.5 hours.

Griessenkar – Saukar and down into valley to Flachau

The ascent up to the Griessenkar is the same as the previous two tours. For this tour variation you follow path no. 45A after the peak and then path no. 45 down to the Saukaralmen as far as the Hundsdorfhütte, where you take route no. 43 right back down into the valley in Flachau.Tour details: 12.5 km, ascent approx. 350 m elevation gain, descent approx. 1,160 m, duration: about 4.5 hours.

Flori’s Adventure Trail – hiking, playing a solving a puzzle

This themed path on the Griessenkar is the ideal hiking tour for families. Suitable for pushchairs, offering lots of games and puzzles, this circular tour takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. You can pick up Flori's puzzle booklet and a pencil free of charge at the Waldgasthof, at the lift station or from the Tourist Office. For all those who solve Flori’s puzzle there’s a reward waiting at the Waldgasthof or at the Tourist Office.

Enjoy the sunrise on the Griessenkar:In July/August you have the opportunity to take part in an organised sunrise tour every Wednesday on the Griessenkar in Flachau.
