When 800 pairs of hands help out… then it’s World Cup time in Flachau

Every year in January the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Women’s Night Slalom race takes place in Flachau on the Hermann Maier FIS World Cup run. Over the years this race has become a real highlight in the world of women’s ski sport. The speedy ladies feel at home in Flachau, as do the thousands of spectators lining the route, and they can look forward to an attractive programme of side events every time.

The media interest is huge. A number of TV and radio stations and over 120 journalists from online and print media from all over the world are present. However, before the first racer can leave the start gate and the fight for every hundredth of a second begins, lots of organisation and preparation is necessary.Organisation starts already 6 months prior to D-day and the nearer it gets to the race, the team, which on race day consists of 400 people, work hard to ensure everything runs smoothly.  From hotel bookings to ticket sales, setting-up of infrastructure, piste preparation, positioning the floodlighting, co-ordination of the emergency chain to guiding the streams of spectators, implementation of safety measures or the running of the race itself – each aspect is important and worked at with commitment. The following pictures give you an insight into what happens behind the scenes of the “Project Ski World Cup” and the people involved.
