Relaxed family holiday in Flachau: the top 5 things to do with kids

The mountains are a really great backdrop for a holiday with children. After all, mountains and valleys simply have more to offer than playing in the sand and swimming. As the mother of a daughter who is now already 8 years old, I really appreciate “tips for activities with kids”. That’s why I suppose my experiences will be of help to some of you.

#1: Excursion to an alpine pasture – also accessible with prams in Flachau

The Marbachalmen alpine pastures in Flachauwinkl are just like you envisaged an alpine pasture: old rustic huts, a beautiful grazing area, with high mountain peaks in the background and all sorts of animals such as cows, pigs, cats, rabbits, geese…The starting point for the hike is the parking area at Marbachtal valley in Flachauwinkl. From here you will reach one of the most beautiful alpine pasture valleys in the region by hiking on a wide trail with moderate ascent along the crystal-clear Marbach stream. The walking time with smaller children up to the alpine hut Prechtlhütte is approximately 1 hour, and after another 20 minutes you will reach the Ennslehenhütte alpine hut. When stopping for refreshments at the Prechtlhütte you absolutely must taste the legendary Krapfen (doughnuts) made by farmer Annemarie! The Kaiserschmarrn (cut-up sugared pancake with raisins) at the Ennslehenhütte is incredible!

#2: Enjoying a ride on a summer lift, as well as fun & games on the mountain is a cool combination

Flori’s Erlebnispfad (adventure trail) starts at the Waldgasthof (forest inn) located directly at the middle station of the “star jet” lift. Once you are equipped with “Flori’s quiz book” – which you can obtain either at the lift station near the Waldgasthof or at the tourism office – the adventure starts. In an unhurried walking time of approx. 2 hours you will pass the many stations featuring games, quizzes and adventure, until you have really solved Flori’s quiz questions at the end. Then there’s a little reward for all kids at the Waldgasthof or at the tourism office. Incidentally, Flori’s Erlebnispfad is accessible with prams, and they can be borrowed at the Waldgasthof.

#3: Quite adventurous, but also quite playful

The “Lucky Flitzer” is Flachau‘s cool all-weather toboggan run on rails. A ride on the Lucky Flitzer is fun, although I have to admit that the loops and jumps will give you a little jitters the first time!By the way, even kids from age 3 can ride with the Lucky Flitzer in the company of an adult. This adventure is also possible alone for kids age 8 and older with a minimum height of 1.25 metres. And best of all: around the Lucky Flitzer there’s also a pretty cool amusement park with lots of play equipment, bouncy castles and mini quads. You can really spend an entire afternoon here.

#4 Family biking along the Enns River with refreshing breaks

A nice & safe bike path along the Enns River leads through the entire Flachau Valley. I like to ride on this path with my family when we go on an excursion to the swimming lake in Flachauwinkl. But there are also other worthwhile stops on this bike path. One of them is the playground & rest area by the water at Kirchnersteg. A stop at the mini golf course in the centre of Flachau is always a must for us when biking along the Enns. Here we usually play a game and treat ourselves to ice cream afterwards!

#5 Splash around & relax in any weather

The Erlebnistherme Amadé (adventure spa) is always a “safe bank” for this. Lots of “cool” fun in the water is guaranteed thanks to outdoor pools, children’s pool, sport pool and wave pool. But naturally the slides are the absolute hit with the bigger kids.
