Whizz into the New Year – tobogganing fun in Flachau
We hope you had a good start to the new year and are full of energy!
A successful start to the new year is guaranteed in the Salzburger Sportwelt, even away from the ski slopes. In Flachau, several toboggan runs offer great winter fun – from classic natural toboggan runs to fast-paced year-round action. Fun is guaranteed, and with the Lucky Flitzer there is also a suitable alternative if the snow conditions are not ideal.
Another plus point at the start of the year: the hike to the start of most toboggan runs is ideal for putting your New Year's sporting resolutions into practice right away. Fresh winter air, exercise in nature and a thrilling descent as a reward – what a way to start the new year. If you want to take it a little easier, you can also relax and let yourself be taken to the top: the Flachau toboggan taxis will take you safely and comfortably to the start of the toboggan runs, so that your tobogganing fun can begin stress-free and in comfort.
Here are my recommendations for unforgettable tobogganing moments in Flachau:
A pleasure all year round: the Lucky Flitzer
When snow isn’t forthcoming, that doesn't mean the end of tobogganing fun in Flachau. The Lucky Flitzer Alpine Coaster provides action and excitement all year round.
The track is 1,080 metres long with a vertical drop of 123 metres. Five spirals and two jumps make the ride particularly varied and lead directly back down into the valley along the family ski run. The Lucky Flitzer is located near the Achter Jet Cable Car and is ideal for families.
My tip: Don't forget your gloves and hat – the wind chill can make it quite cold even on milder days.
The all-weather toboggan run is open daily from 12:00 noon to 7:00 pm. With your guest card, you can also benefit from a discounted rate.
Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can stop off at the Rodelalm while the children whizz down the mountain – a perfect combination of action and enjoyment.
Brennhütte & Munzen – Tobogganing fun day and night
One of the most atmospheric toboggan runs in Flachau, is located between two rustic huts. The illuminated Brennhütte–Munzen natural toboggan run offers 2 kilometres of tobogganing fun for young and old alike, both during the day and in the evening.
The ascent is via the romantic winter hiking trail on the Griessenkarweg and takes about an hour from the town centre. During the day, the toboggan run can also be easily reached on the Space Jet 1 chairlift.
Both the Munzen mountain inn and the Brennhütte offer cosy dining areas with a rustic atmosphere that are ideal for stopping off and refuelling before the descent. Sledges can also be hired at both huts, so there’s nothing to prevent you from having carefree tobogganing fun.
Winterbauer – Enjoyment, views & minibobs
At the Winterbauer, tobogganing fun can be wonderfully combined with good food. First, you walk uphill: the hike from Reitdorf to Winterbauer takes about 60 minutes – perfect for getting a little exercise. Then comes the well-deserved reward: regional delicacies and hearty dishes await you in the cosy hut. Well-fortified, you then set off on the 2.2-kilometre toboggan run, which leads from Winterbauer down to Altenmarkt, near the ‘M-Preis’ supermarket. Anyone staying overnight in Flachau can conveniently use their Guest Mobility Ticket for the return journey – this gives overnight guests free use of public transport throughout the province of Salzburg.
What makes the toboggan run at Winterbauer special is that, in addition to classic sledges, minibobs are also used. As soon as you see this piece of sports equipment, you'll understand where the name comes from. Thanks to their steering sticks and special shape, minibobs are precise, fast and safe – ideal for anyone who wants to try something new on the toboggan run.
Add to that a fantastic view over Flachau and Altenmarkt, and this tour is a real highlight.
Sattelbauer – the classic in Flachau
The Sattelbauer is probably the most famous toboggan run in Flachau – a real classic and a fixed point on many people's winter holiday itinerary. After a pleasant hike of around an hour and a half from Flachau, you will reach the Oberreiter family's mountain inn. The climb is well worth it: once at the top, you will be treated to traditional delicacies based on the motto ‘the best of the simple things’. But be warned: the portions are generous – just right after the climb.
The illuminated toboggan run is about 3 kilometres long, and sledges can be hired directly from the hut. If you want to make the most of your visit to the hut, you can also pre-order ribs from the Sattelbauer – ideal for anyone who wants to combine culinary delights with tobogganing fun.
Other personal recommendations include the mixed grill platter and honey schnapps – but please drink in moderation, as safety comes first, especially on the descent.
Good to know: Natural toboggan runs & conditions
For natural toboggan runs, please check the current conditions and whether the runs are open in advance – safety always comes first. This also includes the right equipment: warm, windproof clothing, sturdy winter boots with good grip, gloves and a hat ensure comfort and safety on the descent. A helmet is recommended for children – and adults, of course. Helmets and other equipment are available from sports shops in Flachau, where they will be happy to advise you.
Our wish for the new year: lots of snow, because the better the conditions, the greater the choice for your very own tobogganing adventure in Flachau.
Conclusion: Start the new year actively
Whether you prefer a sporty or leisurely run, with lots of snow or none at all, the toboggan runs in Flachau offer the right experience for everyone. Enjoy winter hikes, use the Flachau toboggan taxis for a comfortable ascent if required, and look forward to varied descents. We hope for lots of snow, the best conditions and many happy faces on the toboggan runs – so that 2026 can get off to a really good start in the Salzburger Sportwelt.
