Step by step to mountain hut magic - enjoyable hikes on the Rossbrand
Filzmoos - the charming mountain village in Salzburger Land - is perfect for all those who love the authentic Austrian atmosphere. Situated at the foot of the majestic Bischofsmütze, Filzmoos offers unforgettable nature experiences, varied hiking trails, family winter sports, living tradition, warm hospitality and genuine mountain hut magic in both summer and winter.
Our insider tip for the summer?
An absolute must: Take the Papageno cable car up to around 1,600 metres above sea level, continue towards the summit - and savour the hut magic! Because anyone who thinks hiking is only for the sporty has never been on a leisurely hike in Filzmoos: on the Rossbrand, seven mountain huts offer genuine hospitality. On the way: fresh mountain air, varied trails and panoramic views that will take your breath away. And those who finally reach the summit cross on the Rossbrand are rewarded with a 360-degree panoramic view that shows the surrounding mountains in all their splendour - a moment to marvel, linger and enjoy.
Pleasure hikes - the (tasty) journey is the reward
There are numerous hikes on the Rossbrand, which start directly at the mountain station of the Papageno cable car - and no matter which path you choose: You are guaranteed to pass at least two huts.
Mountain huts with heart & home-made recipes
Schörgi Alm
The Schörgi Alm is located right next to the mountain station of the Papageno cable car - perfect as a start or crowning finale. And what can we say: the farmer's doughnuts are simply legendary. Freshly prepared, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside - served with a choice of homemade jam or vanilla ice cream. We even asked for the recipe ... but it's a closely guarded secret from Tina's grandma. (We'll stay tuned!)
Karhütte
If you take the panoramic trail or the ‘Filz & Moor’ moorland path towards the summit, you will reach the Karhütte just before the final ascent. The specialities? A juicy hut cake that tastes like childhood - and a very special venison aspic. The meat for this comes directly from the Rossbrand - regional, honest, prepared with great care and incredibly good. Simply enjoy and take in the tranquillity of the surrounding mountains.
Radstädter Hütte
Just below the Rossbrand summit you’ll find the Radstädter Hütte - a popular place to stop for a bite to eat with a wonderful view and cosy atmosphere. Unfortunately, we were unable to find out exactly what delicacies are on the menu there in summer - the landlords are (still) keeping a low profile. But it's worth a visit for the great location and the warm welcome alone!
Steinalm
A hut known for its honest, traditional cuisine - down-to-earth and made with love. A speciality is the farfel soup, an almost forgotten recipe from the region, which is prepared according to an old family recipe. The homemade cottage cream cheese is served seasonally with farmhouse bread or on an oven-baked potato. Its flavour varies - because what the cows eat on the alpine meadows changes with the seasons: sometimes spicy herbs, sometimes fresh mountain grass - it's all natural. The dishes and their flavours are based on what the mountain pasture has to offer - fresh, handmade and simply genuine in the best sense of the word.
Oberhagmoosalm
You can get them here - probably the world's best “pofesen”: Slices of bread filled with powdered milk jam, dipped in egg and fried to a crispy golden brown. A real classic among Austrian pastries - and simply irresistible here on the alpine pasture. Tip: The homemade bacon is also a speciality. The bacon bread from the Oberhagmoosalm really deserves a place in culinary heaven.
Mandlberggut
If you hike another 40 minutes from the Steinalm, you will reach the Mandlberggut - a perfect destination for an extended day hike. Here you will be spoilt with light and fluffy “Kaiserschmarrn” and homemade pastries from the senior proprietress. And if you fancy a schnapps, you've come to the right place: the in-house distillery produces fine brandies, liqueurs, gin and whisky - all made with love.
Moosalm
Finally, a real insider tip: the Moosalm with its curd cheese dumplings, which taste so good that you'll want to order seconds. The speciality: The curd cheese comes from the farm's own cows, which graze on lush meadows around the alp. From grass to dumplings - it couldn't be more local!
More hut magic?
Of course, it's worth stopping off at all the huts - each has its own specialities and stories. By the way, we spoke to the landlords: During the summer months, we post recipes and insights into the hut kitchen on Facebook and Instagram (@filzmoos.ski) - maybe someone will tell us a secret recipe after all. So feel free to follow us! ;)
And in winter?
Then of course it continues - because the Filzmoos ski area also offers other cosy huts that delight with excellent cuisine and genuine hospitality.

Please note:
Depending on the season, the food on offer can change - because as much as possible is home-made up in the mountains and what the alpine pastures and animals have to offer is used. Here you know exactly what's on your plate: fresh, home-made and prepared with lots of love. And sometimes a little different from the last time you visited.
