Silent Night, Advent and Culture in Wagrain-Kleinarl
The world's most famous Christmas carol, ‘Silent Night! Holy Night!’, was written and set to music in the Salzburg region. But did you know that Wagrain-Kleinarl has close ties to the song and its history? Joseph Mohr, who wrote the lyrics, worked here as a vicar and, with his social commitment and deep faith, shaped the cultural heritage of the place that continues to this day.
Joseph Mohr was born in Salzburg in 1792 and had an eventful life. After working in various parishes, he came to Wagrain in 1837, where he devoted himself to helping the poor and sick and was known for his closeness to the people. His social work and warmth left a lasting mark on the town. Joseph Mohr died in 1848 at the age of 56 and was buried in the cemetery in Wagrain – his grave can still be visited today.
