A look behind the scenes of the cross-country ski trail on the Rossbrand in Filzmoos shows how much attention to detail and craftsmanship goes into creating the perfect trail. Rupert Rettenwender, experienced track machine operator and ‘master of the trails’, gives us an insight into his everyday life - one of the most beautiful jobs imaginable.
‘Each day is different. The conditions are constantly changing, and that's what makes my job
so exciting,’ explains Rupert. To create the perfect trail, he has numerous options to adjust his track setter. The depth of the track and the speed of the cutter must be precisely adapted to the snow conditions. It is a mixture of experience, intuition and a touch of ingenuity.
His work begins in the evening, after the ski lift closes. Rupert then has plenty of time to prepare the trails for the next day. ‘It takes about three hours to make the tracks, but it's worth every minute,’ he says. If necessary - such as in the event of fresh snow conditions – the trails are groomed once again early in the morning.
The fresh mountain air is something very special. It gives you a feeling of freedom, and the view into the distance makes all your worries disappear.
